Someone making art for all of us, even for those who will never see it

Coming off of Salmon, down from the Mt. Tabor, we turned a corner into a short, narrow alleyway. Here is what appeared before us. We felt given-to, almost loved a little by it's presence.
Is there art that is not given? An act of generosity?
Tell me what you think.

Back from sickbed to continue adventure

After soaking wet walking day, my cold came back with a vengeance. Sleep, my body yelled, Sssllleeepp!   until I obeyed.  I've been sleeping for two days. Two days spent in wild, woolly, lovely DreamTime.  And now, I'm better.

Here are some photos from beginning of our walk. Friendship, feelings, sentiments wove through our conversation as we walked. I like to imagine I feel like a bird who has just finished her nest. Sitting on branch in a tree across the way, I look back, spent and ready for more.

A short, short story: Remember how my mother used to have one of us kids stand in front of the sign that said the name of the place where we were on vacation?   Okay, that's how we begin then. Go.

we got this

Meandering on & off Hawthorne blvd today we walked our artist walk. I was able to be in text contact with Richard & Elspeth along the way.  Lovely co-mingling of UK and Portland. For brief moments, I was back in Glasgow walking and chatting with them. I felt close to them and far away at the same time. Unusual, beautiful feeling state.

Karim & I got soaking, wet-dog wet. Realized now I did not feel the wet most of the time. We were just walking, talking remarkable talk, creating new languages, ducking under rain laden tree branches, singing on the bridge, & falling in love with our real human selves with each & every step.

More Posts of walking particulars with photos & audio (cross fingers) coming to you a bit later. They are for you. We couldn't have done it without you.

Richard walking (via email & emely site info)

emely wikisite says: http://emely.wikispaces.com/Open%20Engagement%20walkabouts

On the 15th May, Richard Layzell (http://www.rescen.net/routeplanner/) will explore the geo-historical landscape of a part of North London, which used to be a holiday destination for Central Londoners in Victorian times. Meet 4pm at the exit to Manor House tube station (Picadilly Line).

1st email with walking plan:
I ... decided to make it a local walk and that we will trace the New River partly by walking up and down a parallel series of streets called The Ladder, each street crosses the river and there are about 12 of them. The New River was built in 1613 to bring fresh water to London:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_(England)

I’m planning to walk at 4pm because at this time we’ll also hear the roars of
sound from the Arsenal soccer stadium a mile away.

most recent email:
...might be just me and (Rosalie).  Really like the idea of texting..... Looking forward.

Lily writing this:  Yes, we're going to try texting from our very smart phones along the way while we walk. No idea if this continent to continent texting will work, so thinking about it as---new adventures with our smart phones. (And we'll see if they really are that smart!)

This is the river Clyde in south Glasgow. The tiny mob is us:  Richard, Elspeth, me, & all the other artists from Winter School: Kaite, Jeremy, Christina, Jane, Alicia, and Julia, at the end of long day walking Glasgow. We were collaborating as we scouted for sites and inspiration for upcoming performance art works.  Winter School w/artist Richard Layzell Mar2011.

Elspeth's walking plan (via emails)

Here is Elspeth.

1st email with map:
My plan, having heard both of yourses, is to walk at 4pm GMT on 15 May with Max Weaver Lavers, young son of my friend Kirsten. He took part in the original burying - the numbers in red on this map (click to enlarge) show the points which our walk will link and we will be looking for traces of the burying places  [for more info on the project go to www.imaginedcorners and click on in the dark)

2nd email:

Hello all

Max and I have got our plan: to start with a great trumpeting at 4pm so that you know we have set off and then to lapse into a quieter phase and to while away the time till dusk meandering in a sort of circle.
Look forward to exchanges, possibly during or after.

yrs artfully
Max and Elspeth

from here to there

This is view from Hawthorne St & 42nd of Mt Tabor off in the distance. See the green rise on the horizon?

This is view we will see as we walk westward along Hawthorne Street toward city center. Off in the distance you might spy a very slight rise under the clouds. Those are called the west hills and psu is located in city center beneath them.
Mt Tabor @ 60th and Salmon to the Willamette River is an easy to calculate distance since the river is in fact "0" so = 60 blks.  From river to Park (which is 8th block from river) and then up Park to openengagement is approximately 13 blocks = 73 blocks total. Maybe we will zigzag somewhere along the way to make it a nice, fat 75 blocks.

This adds up to a walk through one Portland heart-vein; full of bustling bloodlines made-up of quirkiness and neighborhood and peoples and commerce and diversity and river and old growth trees and street art and more pairs of feet walking than I can count.

Artist Walks, in Portland with Richard Layzell & osalieSchweikerRosalieSchweiker in London, Lily Gael in Portland, and Elspeth Owen in Grantchester CP

Sunday morning, May 15th, 2011 @ 8am pst Lily is taking an artist’s walk in Portland with artist & friend Karim Alladdine.  Although you might not be able to see this next part, we will also be walking with Richard Layzell and Rosalie (Emely) in London where it will be 4pm gmt.  Thinking about the walk, the where, how, & why of it, I did the same thing Richard was doing in London. As he put it, he was dithering until he decided on the route.  My dithering ended before Richards, but when you think about it that makes perfect sense; when you fly into the UK its almost always the next day.  You might wonder how Elspeth figures in on this time shifty-ness? Elspeth is a time zone unto herself, that’s how I figuring it. She’s so deep in earthtime of the UK that I imagine Time comes out to meet her instead of the other way around.  (in the next blog post, I'll put the description she sent along of her collaboration with Sundays walk ).
I decided to walk with Karim after getting down to the question: what do I desire from this walking? (of course I’ve learned that often when I have a yearning, so do some others).  The answer came easier than expected: I want to walk with an artist friend who I love, and who, after hanging around together, I leave feeling more inspirational, more forgiving of reality, a bit sillier, and foolishly happier to be alive.
Sounds a little like being in love don’t you think? And like a lover, my desire is crawl in deeper and listen, to hear what he has to say about art these days.  To ask, suppose, say a bit, listen some more, noodle about the Portland urban streets and parks with our heads and feet. I want to share in his sweet, brilliant big mind. I want to ask strangers to take our photograph.  So, I am going to walk next to Karim and hang on his every word. Listen with eyes glistening.
Our Walking Route:  approx. 5.5 miles.  We will make our way from the Salmon Street entry gate of the live volcano Portland calls Mt. Tabor Park, heading downtown to Portland State University (home to the dept of art’s Social Practice program and this weekend’s 12/13/14May openengagement.com conference) along Hawthorne Blvd until it curves left @ 12th Ave, then left again, and becomes Main Street. We’ll follow Main to the South Park Blocks and head west, past the Pdx Art Museum, the Historical Society, a few churches. Along the Park Blocks @ Salmon street (where we started remember?) huge old trees will tower over us. I think we’ll come to the end of our artist’s walk talking about humility and generosity.  Leonie, Quinn, and Dexter, Karim’s intimate family, will meet us at Portland State. We’ll hug and kiss and Leonie will drive us all home.

Emely wikisite: the walkabout on Sunday 15May11

On the 15th May, Richard Layzell will explore the geo-historical
landscape of a part of North London, which used to be a holiday destination for Central Londoners in Victorian times.  Meet 4pm at the exit to Manor House tube station (Picadilly Line).
Lily Gael will be walking at the same time in Portland. She is walking with artist-friend Karim Alladdine because she loves him, and desires friendships with artists. They are meeting at 8am pst @ Portland's own live volcano (Mt. Tabor Park) & walking along Hawthorne Street across Willamette River to city center where Portland State University & openengagement conference is headquartered.
ps. Lily also loves her artist friends Richard Layzell and Elspeth Owens {walking in Grantchester CP on Sunday, see http://imaginedcorners.net/home.html} & she thanks Rosalie who Lily looks forward to befriending one day.

Email Rosalie.Schweiker [at]gmail.com for updates and more information.

The walks are part of the

conference, which is happening at the same time in Portland (USA).
The Open Engagement conference is an initiative of Portland State University’s Art and Social Practice MFA concentration. Directed by Jen Delos Reyes and planned in conjunction with Harrell Fletcher and the Art and Social Practice students, this year’s conference features internationally renowned artists Julie Ault, Fritz Haeg, and Pablo Helguera. The work by these artists’ touch on subjects including democracy, group work, the boundary (or lack there of) between art and life, education, and transdisciplinarity.

If you happen to be in Portland, you can attend the conference for free (see schedule here).
